Leather Looks
1954–1963
While Coach is still true to Bonnie Cashin’s brass hook style, another designer that emulated Cashin was Jonathan Anderson for Loewe’s Women’s Autumn/Winter 2018 collection. This collection worked with textures incorporating leathers, furs, tweeds, silks, and lace paired with subtle prints and pleating techniques. Strong tailoring throughout kept the line wearable and minimal while becoming unique with the mixed materials. Jonathan Anderson said he played with ‘classicism’ stating that it will always be present, but it needs to be made relevant for today.
Bonnie Cashin’s style and use of leather can be seen throughout, using leather as a material for more garments including tops, bottoms, dresses, and coats. The beautiful craftsmanship in leather garments was inspired by Cashin’s bold designs in the 1950s and 60s. Anderson also incorporated heavy knits, similar to Cashin, over lace, cotton, and leather to complement. Cashin did not shy away from color, employing bright colors such as blues and reds in her leather pieces as well as the traditional neutral tones. In contrast, Loewe kept to neutral tones of orange-brown, black, and navy and interjected plaid and checkered prints. Overall, Jonathan Anderson nods to the 50’s innovative fashions and Bonnie Cashin’s ingenuity in Loewe’s Autumn/Winter 2018 show.
